Why is traffic jam a serious problem in Dhaka?
Traffic jam is a serious problem all over the world. When it comes to talk about Dhaka city it counts as one of the major problems. Because of traffic jam many people get stuck in the streets and can not go to their respective places on time, students face difficulties to reach their institute to attend classes or sometimes they even miss their exams, patients in critical condition have to suffer inside the ambulance without treatment. Sometimes the traffic jam get so heavy that it covers a few kilometres of roads. Passengers moving from one place to another suffer much due to this type of situation. Many passengers can’t catch their train, flight or buses moving to another city because of heavy traffic. Traffic jam is so common to Dhaka city’s people that they usually leave their residence before two to three hours of their work in a particular place. This problem is getting more serious day by day in this city .
Who is responsible for this issue?
But there’s a question raised whenever it comes to a discussion about this topic that who is responsible for this? Or what is the main reason behind this issue? If we do research on it then it can be said that technically both administration and local pedestrians are responsible for it . The reasons and the solutions regarding this problem given below .
How is our administration responsible for traffic jam?
Our administration has some duties to resolve problems happening in a city in this country . As Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh the responsibility is greater than other cities. But noticing the traffic situation on a daily basis it is clearly visible that authorities are not doing their duty properly. The number of traffic police is not sufficient as compared to the vehicles running on the road. However, it is mostly seen that roads are narrow in comparison to the number of vehicles, most traffic signal lights are not working properly in Dhaka, the number of private cars is greater than the public vehicle which causes more traffic on the road. Again a major problem is whenever an administrative person is moving from his place roads are blocked by their instructions for a long time which creates a heavy traffic on the street specially in office or school hours. People in Dhaka city suffer very much due to road blocks. Moreover, time shift is another reason for traffic maintained by the authorities. They allow all the schools , colleges and offices to start at the same time which leads to a heavy traffic jam everyday in Dhaka. Traffic police do not control the local buses parking, their stoppage and their speed . Besides, many drivers don’t even have a driving licence but they are driving recklessly across the road as they know that our traffic police department is not sufficiently conscious. But not only the administration is responsible for traffic jam, also the local public are responsible equally for it.
Common people are also equally responsible for traffic issue
First of all, most people cross the road without maintaining traffic rules and they also don’t use the zebra crossing while doing it. People feel very lazy climbing up stairs of foot over bridges which are built for their safety to cross the road. Besides, they are seen stopping the running vehicles on the road to cross which leads to an accident sometimes and the traffic gathers on the road again. Most private cars are spotted being parked in no parking zones or on the road which also creates a long line of vehicles in the street. People travelling to local buses stop the bus wherever they see it but they don’t even think whether the bus is near its stoppage or not and again it may lead to a traffic jam.
Necessary steps that should be taken by the administration
To solve this serious problem our administration and higher departments need to follow some necessary steps like, government should pass order to build more foot over bridge and if these foot over bridge have escalator to move up more people would feel free to use these bridges, roads should be broaden, traffic police must control the stoppage position of vehicles, more traffic police should be hired by authority, the administrative people should have a separate lane on the road instead of blocking the road, slow vehicles should have their separate lane to move, traffic department needs to become more active, government should increase the number of public transport and should also enhance the quality of public transport services so that more people will prefer public vehicles instead of private vehicles, our administration should also manage the working hours of different sections to manage heavy traffic, laws need to be more strict son that people will follow them willingly.
Steps that pedestrians should work on
Not only administration have all duties to solve this problem but also local pedestrians have some their own duties too. People should wait for red light to cross the road, drivers of private cars should be careful about where to stop their cars or to park, we should also avoid private vehicles if it is not necessary to hire it. Thus maintaining these steps the traffic problem of Dhaka city can easily be solved.
